Art Day Events and Competitions

  • Opening Ceremony - 
  • Art Day Events - Unless stated otherwise, all events start from 8:30 AM and are available until 1:30 PM (before our closing ceremony). This year's guest judge is Adam Crowley, a realist painter from Kansas City, MO.
  • Closing Ceremony - We will end our event at 2:00 PM in the Auditorium. Art Day awards will be given to the winners of our workshop competitions and trophies to the top competing schools.

Art Competition 

 

Wellness Center

The Art Competition is the crowning event for Art Day. Each high school can bring up to 30 works of art to be displayed and judged. Art Day judges will view several hundred works of art and present Best of Show, Artistic Excellence, and Honorable Mention awards to selected works. The competition offers students the opportunity to publicly display their art and to view the work of their fellow students. The show is a wonderful source of inspiration and ideas for students and educators alike.

Art History

 

Room MS-1 (in the CT Building)

This event will test student knowledge in the area of Art History. Questions will be taken from all of Art History. One team per school, up to four students per team. Teachers compete as individuals. 

Artist Trading Cards

9:00 AM - 12:00 PM

CT Hallway

This event will give students a chance to design and make Artist Trading Cards (ATCs) Cards can be made ahead and brought for trading. ATC's are 2.5"X3.5".  The HCC art department will supply the necessary blank cards and materials.

Costume Contest

Ready. Set. Go! Start creating your gorgeous handcrafted costumes and come show us what you’ve got! Incredible handmade costumes celebrating your favorite video game characters – as well as original characters inspired by these themes – will be apart of Art Day 43's Costume Competition! Best of show will awarded a prize!

Draw for Keeps

 

CT-117

Contestants will be given an elegantly posed secret Gaming Artifact bathed in dramatic light. Paper and materials will be provided, but students can bring materials of choice with them. Any 2D medium is allowed. The winner will be determined by Art Day jurors. The winner will receive the secret artifact as a trophy!

Greenspace

Swing by the massive Big H and inscribe your mark to endure throughout the ages. Selfies with the H are encouraged! This event will be open throughout the day to anyone who would like to participate. The HCC art department will supply the necessary tools and materials. 

Mammoth Mural

9:00 AM - 12:00 PM

CT Foyer

This collaborative event will help piece together a painting with a digital twist. What is it? What will it reveal? Each student will draw/paint a small piece of a larger work to be unveiled at the awards ceremony. The HCC art department will supply the necessary tools and materials.

Self Portrait Competition

 

CT-130

Contestants will create their creative self portrait. Paper and materials will be provided, but students can bring materials of choice with them. Any 2D medium is allowed. The winner will be determined by Art Day jurors and will receive a prize. 

Sidewalk Chalk

8:30 AM - 1:00 PM

 

Each school will have the opportunity to create an art history inspired sidewalk chalk drawing. There will be an additional theme-related prompt. This allows us to keep the playing field even and fosters creativity in the moment. 

Drawings must be complete by 1:00 pm when judging begins.

Team Clay Sculpture

 

Greenspace North of CT Building. (Suggested additional clay tools may be beneficial.)

The criteria/parameters of this event will be revealed on the day of the contest. This contest is designed to challenge the students' abilities to work as a team as well as their understanding of three dimensional design, and the principles of physics. Each school will be given 25 pounds of clay and limited tools.  Each school is limited to ONE team of 4 students.

Wheel Throwing Competition

8:30 AM - 12:30 PM

Ceramics Studio (CT-134)

This traditional and eagerly attended event is designed to test throwing ability. Students will be allowed TWO pounds of clay and TWO minutes in which to throw a specified form. One attempt per half hour! Specific dimensions and judging criteria will be revealed during the event. The art department will supply the necessary tools and materials. Visit the studio sometime during the day and give it a try or just cheer on your classmates.

Wheel Throwing Competition - Teachers

Art Instructors are invited to the Five Throw competition to dethrone last year's ruler of the wheel. Stop in and give it a spin.
